Getting to know the person behind the practice
I am Marli Goosen, a Registered Counsellor and Psychometrist based in Worcester, Western Cape.
My professional journey has taken me through private practice and educational settings, giving me the opportunity to work with people experiencing a wide range of personal, emotional, developmental and life challenges.
I have worked at Pioneer School for the Visually Impaired and currently work as an Education Counsellor at Breede Valley School of Skills. These experiences have strengthened my understanding of the many factors that shape a person’s experiences, relationships and emotional wellbeing.
Alongside my work in education, I value the opportunity to work with adults navigating their own challenges, whether these involve stress, anxiety, difficult experiences, personal growth or periods of change and uncertainty. I believe that every stage of life brings its own complexities, and that seeking support can be a valuable step towards greater understanding and change.
My approach
I believe that people are more than the difficulties they experience.
Our thoughts, emotions, physical responses, relationships and life experiences are interconnected. Understanding these connections can help us make sense of what we are going through and identify approaches that are appropriate to our individual needs.
My approach is warm, collaborative and practical. I aim to create a space where people feel comfortable exploring their experiences without fear of judgement.
Depending on the individual and their needs, my work may involve short-term psychological counselling, brain- and body-based interventions, or psychometric assessment. I value approaches that are purposeful and responsive to the person, rather than assuming that the same method will work for everyone.
I also believe in the importance of professional collaboration and appropriate referral when additional or specialised support is needed.
My qualifications and professional registration
I hold a BA Music Degree (Stellenbosch University), 2 Bachelors of Psychology (BPsych-Equivalent) degrees in Counselling (Cornerstone Institute) and Psychometry (Stellenbosch University), as well as a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) from Stellenbosch University.
I am registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a:
Registered Counsellor
Psychometrist
My professional training and experience inform my work in psychological counselling, psychometric assessment and brain- and body-based interventions, including BrainWorking Recursive Therapy (BWRT®) and Tension & Trauma Releasing Exercises (TRE®).
A whole-person perspective
I am interested in understanding people beyond the immediate problem that brings them to counselling.
For a child or adolescent, this may involve understanding their emotional world, developmental needs, relationships and environment. For an adult, it may mean exploring longstanding patterns, navigating a difficult experience, managing stress or finding a different way forward.
Regardless of age or circumstance, I believe that meaningful support begins with understanding the individual, recognising their strengths and identifying what may help them move forward.
Based in Paarl and Worcester
I offer private practice appointments in Paarl and Worcester, Western Cape, as well as online consultations where appropriate.
Whether you are seeking short-term therapy, exploring brain- and body-based interventions, or looking for a psychometric assessment, you are welcome to get in touch to discuss your needs and arrange an appointment.
