Understanding the connection between the brain and body
Our experiences can influence not only how we think and feel, but also how our bodies respond. Sometimes, we continue to experience emotional reactions, fear or tension even when we understand what is happening or why we respond in a particular way.
Alongside psychological counselling, I offer brain- and body-based approaches that may help clients explore these responses and work towards greater awareness and regulation. These include BrainWorking Recursive Therapy (BWRT®) and Tension and Trauma Releasing Exercises (TRE®).
BrainWorking Recursive Therapy (BWRT®)
BWRT® is a structured psychological approach that focuses on how the brain responds to triggers and situations. It works with the rapid, often automatic responses that can occur before we have had time to consciously process an experience.
BWRT® may be considered when working with concerns such as:
- Anxiety and fear-related responses
- Unwanted emotional reactions
- Distressing memories or experiences
- Patterns of responding that a person would like to change
The process is guided by the individual’s needs and the concern being addressed. BWRT® is not about erasing experiences or memories, but about working with the responses associated with them.
Tension and Trauma Releasing Exercises (TRE®)
TRE® is a body-based approach involving a series of exercises designed to activate a natural tremor response in the body. This response may help release muscular tension and support physical relaxation.
Stress and difficult experiences can sometimes be accompanied by physical tension or a sense of being continually on edge. TRE® offers a way to engage with the body as part of the process of managing stress and tension.
TRE® is introduced according to the individual’s needs, comfort and suitability. Clients are encouraged to approach the exercises at their own pace and to remain attentive to their body’s responses.
An individualised approach
BWRT® and TRE® are different approaches, and neither is suitable for everyone or every concern. The choice of intervention depends on the individual, their circumstances and the nature of the difficulty they are experiencing.
Where appropriate, these approaches may be incorporated into a broader process of psychological support. We can discuss your needs and determine whether one of these approaches may be suitable for you.
Appointments are available in Paarl and Worcester, with online sessions where appropriate.
